Aged for 15 years in hand-picked oak barrels, this Speyside single malt Scotch whisky was distilled using peated malted barley at Tomintoul Distillery, giving that self-acknowledged 'Peaty Tang' uncommon in its region.
Bottled at a smooth 40% ABV, this release marks something of a follow up from this little beauty, only this edition has a declared age statement.
Aromatic heather roots and charred, musty oak opens onto copper and sherbet lemon effervescence amongst gristly barley sugar.
Burnt, buttered toast, green apple chunks and vegetal oak with hot white peppercorns. Honey-roasted walnuts linger with a few herbaceous notes underneath.
Long, warm with spicy cardamom prickling away in the backdrop.
There is a strong aroma of peat, but the taste is very subtle. It tastes like water that's been infused with smoke. If you like peaty, this will be far too subtle, and if you don't like peat, it'll be too peaty I suspect.
