An 18 year old from the Tomatin distillery, finished in Spanish oak Oloroso sherry butts.
The nose is quite punchy and of good body. There are notes of chewy grape and sultana with winter spice; cloves and cinnamon. There are notes of vanilla fudge and a most supple of smokes, weaving gracefully in cut grasses and apple peels. The palate is quite sweet and full. There are notes of barley sugar and honeycomb. Hints of chocolate orange and cocoa dusted liberally on toasty oak. The finish is long and powerful with a dry, chewy oak and a touch of pepper.
Rich and sherried, with orchard, citrus and dried fruit – apples, oranges and sultanas.
Sweet and honeyed, with a backbone of citrus, fruit cake, chocolate and spice.
Long and warming spice fades to leave fruit and chocolate.
I started my journey trying to replace the Macallan 12 Sherry which I was impressed by but assumed I’m paying for the name rather than the quality. Steered through GlenAllachie cask strength 12 yo which seemed a master explosion of Christmas cake and spices, the GlenDronach which wasn’t any different to a supermarket offering and a few others such as the Lagavulin 16 which I found it’s smokiness a thing of beauty only to remain with an after taste of cigarette ashes quite literally… This however just won me over. I know it’s unfair to compare an 18 yo with a 12 but who cares. It cost more than macallan 12 Sherry by about 50% more but it leaves you with no room to doubt. This is super special. Forget the fancy words of nose, pallet and after taste and just close your eyes and take a sip slowly. No water, no ice, no dilution just neat. It’s a thing of beauty. It’s remarkable!
smooth, no alcohol taste or bitterness, but flavors are very very weak, doesn't worst for this price.
Can’t believe master of malt tasting notes don’t mention the wonderful nuttiness, rum and raisin notes from this whisky , a cracking 18 year old whisky with a lovely cask influence
Wonderful tipple, so easy to drink. This has everything if you like a mellow whisky with fruit, nuts and subtle spice. It’s like a big slice of Christmas cake!
I've been sticking with the excellent Glendronach 21 Parliament, but fancied a new sherry cask and thought I've give this one a try. I'm just so glad that I did. It's a cracker. If you like the sweeter profiles, this is a high-end chocolate box with all the fruity notes, caramels and an espresso finish. Great value at this price point. Very impressive. 10/10.
