This 12 year old was released in late 2003 to replace the 10 year old. A medium-bodied single malt from the Tomatin distillery.
Medium-bodied and well-balanced. There are notes of toasted cereals and barley. Hints of winter spice and buttery pepper emanating from the toasty oak. Hints of dark sugar and cut flowers with a note of malt extract, rum and apple peel.
Good body and quite sweet. There are notes of fudge and dark sugar, winter spice and a touch of vinosity, notes of toffee apple and Bramley peel with notes of dried herbs.
Good length with notes of boiled sweets and fruity sweetness.
I drink low-to midrange single malts regularly, and keep the Magellan 18 y.o. and whanot for special occasions. My favorite will always be Glenfiddich 15 y.o., but this Scotch ranks with a good batch of Glenmorange Quinta Rubin for $10 less.

I've tasted many Scotches in the US and Scotland and for a 12 yr Highland malt it's flavorful and reasonably priced. It's a Highland having more Christmas spice and less fruit flavors as found in a Speyside. I get lots of toasty barley and brown sugar with a long spicy finish. On the nose there is vanilla and Carmel. I'm thankful the Japanese saved this distillary. This is a great buy and change of pace from other 12 year olds. Add it to your collection.
Saw this on a shelf of a store while traveling. 12 year single malt for $30? Yes, please! But after trying, it tastes like a much more immature scotch... basically a somewhat nicer but more costly Famous Grouse. It strangely sits between being a premium mixer and just ok on its own. Everything about the taste just misses for me and there's much better whiskey choices in this price range. It's worth a try but it just doesn't have anything to make it a go-to sipper.
I'm not sure why the reviews are so polarized on this whisky. Yes, it tastes volume produced (and Tomatin is a large volume distillery) but it's 'good quality' volume produced, if you know what I mean. Nicely rich and malty, supple texture and relatively full bodied for $27 a bottle. I would rate this better than any other in its price range, including Speyburn 10.
