The Woodsman is a blended Scotch whisky from Whyte & Mackay (owners of Dalmore, Fettercairn, Jura and Tamnavulin), designed for use in cocktails and mixed drinks. Particularly oak-y, as you might expect from the name, with plenty of vanilla and nutty malt notes in tow. Nothing to do with Justin Timberlake's album Man of the Woods.
Sandalwood, honey, almond slices and sawdust.
Creamy vanilla, ginger root, slight grain sweetness.
A touch of smoke underneath spearmint and cinnamon.
Just old enough to be legally called whisky, but little depth and no advatage over the standard supermarket staples such as Bells and The Famous Grouse. Certainly does not merit a premium price.
Young. Citrus. Toffee and a distant dark chocolate. Very first was white pepper and I happen to be a white pepper lover with food so that grabbed my interest straight off. But a bit to harsh or is it hard... to be drank on it's own. Short finish. Very slightly smoky. Thin. Am off to try with a bit of coke because this is the world of mixer whisky. The bottle is beautiful. The bottle will become something on the bathroom shelf it would be criminal to chuck such a beautiful thing in the bin. It's probably the best bottle I've seen in a long while.
With the knowledge. Its a gem, honest, pleasant, smooth. Don't mix. Drink at room temperature. It "does not" taste watered down. It has a great flavour. It has genuinely been well crafted and blended. It is not for everyones palate. If you want a heavier or smokier drink you will not be delighted. But then, most whiskeys/whiskys are not.
Nothing wrong with it for £18 on offer. I would have been very disappointed if I had paid more.
