The Oxford Artisan Distillery Rye Whisky - Batch 1

We sold this highly anticipated whisky via a bottle lottery. Why all the fuss? Read more about this approach over on the blog.

The Oxford Artisan Distillery has released its very first and very own rye whisky! Production for this one began with a diverse maslin grain harvest in 2017, which featured several different grains grown together in the same field, including ancient heritage rye strains, as well as wheat strains, and even some oats and thistles – the final mash bill contained rye, wheat, and malted barley. A long fermentation took place in Hungarian oak vats, and after distillation, the spirit was matured in virgin American oak casks. An impressive, fascinating expression.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose

Big spices initially cardamom and Sichuan pepper, then cinnamon and cloves with freshly baked bread and dark chocolate.

Palate

Black pepper, chillies and gingernut biscuits, with dark chocolate, toffee, and baking spices and an intense herbal character running through it. The texture is smooth and sweet.

Finish

It’s that aromatic cardamom notes that lingers, and lingers and lingers. That’s one long finish.
