The Macallan Sienna - 1824 Series

The third darkest bottling in the no-age-statement, sherry matured 1824 Series from The Macallan. Sienna is a naturally occurring pigment, referring not only to the hue of this expression but to the fact that The Macallan's whiskies are all released with no added colouring.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Noticeably bigger than Gold and Amber, orange peel, vanilla sugar and hot cross buns.

    Palate

Raisins and dried apricots, ripe greengages, frozen currants.

    Finish

Fruity and slightly spiced with a touch of anise.

    Overall

This is where the 1824 Series becomes more intense.

    Surprisingly Complex

This is actually my favorite non-$400-per-bottle whisky. Relatively sweet, but with much more complexity than you would expect from either the initial taste or the nose- it just opens up beautifully. Don't be afraid of a good No Age Statement whisky- nobody likes a snob, and you are only cheating yourself.

    Wow

May be the best shot I have ever had. Pricy but worth it!

    Superb Malt

This expression is so good! Extremely mouth watering. Flavor is intense, but the alcohol note is not rough. Sherry, milk chocolate, vanilla, melted mascabado sugar, red dark fruits.... My God

    The best all-around Mac

Just noticed one reviewer below saying selling a drink based solely off its colour is misleading and that they have put colouring in the whisky. Tut tut he/she clearly hasn't been reading the box and clearly doesn't know there Mac's as Macallan never use colouring in there whisky, there all natural colouring from the barrels and aging process. This is a perfect example of a Macallan and all Macallan's age very well compared to some other whisky's that take a lot longer to get the desired result there for command a higher price and yes there are some great drams out there but it wont have Macallan's style !. There unique !!!

    The great pretender!

Nice try Macallan - pretends to be a refined sherry casked whisky but can't hide its youth. Buy all the 12 yo sherry cask whilst you can! ...and of course anything older you can afford. There are always G&M's Speymalt Macallans that look and taste like great value alternatives to "factory" bottlings. I write this having tried everything up to the 25 yo sherry cask, and with 2 bottles of 30 yo in storage, so am a Macallan fan, but just can't see the cynical new marketing justifying the huge premiums over better and smaller distilleries' offerings. By the way, just visited the distillery a few days back - the place is like a massive building site and looks like hell - no romance left and has more in common with a lager brewery. Another reason to think about Balvenie and similar.
