The Macallan
Scotland
Single Malt
The Macallan Quest range (originally released for the Travel Retail market) features four expressions showing off the many, many miles travelled to sources the casks to mature the Speyside whisky. The Lumina expression is made with whisky aged in sherry-seasoned European and American oak casks, as well as hogsheads. While sherry does get a good look-in with this one, it's a much more vanilla and toffee-focussed dram.

Poached pear and stewed apples, with a kick of black pepper underneath. Some treacle tart notes, too.
Caramelised nuts dusted with cinnamon, a whiff of waxy peels, guava.
Fizzy oak and ground nutmeg.
When I try The Macallan travel whisky’s I tend stick to the second lowest priced bottle. In this case the lumina. Compared to the Whiskey Makers Edition from the previous travel retail, this is much much creamier and more viscous. Where the whisky makers edition was more dark fruits and candies berries; this whiskey is more mellow with vanillas and light Sherry. But although I tend to lean toward Sherry bombs, the mouth feel on this one makes me choose this over the whisky makers edition. A great whisky.
