The Macallan Gold - 1824 Series

Macallan's 1824 range has done away with age-statements and instead focuses on the colour of the whisky. The concept being that the older the whisky is the darker it will be... Regardless of how true this really is, it's certainly a great whisky packed with assertive vanilla and citrus flavours.

This bottle was part of a private collection - if you'd like more detailed photos just get in touch!

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

This burnished gold spirit presents a lemon citrus nose, the orange peel and an interlacing sweetness that softens but doesn't eliminate the zest. A quiet note of vanilla is followed by dark chocolate - more assertive, yet not overly so - with a lingering floral and light oak notes.

    Palate

Citrus and boiled sweets rule the palate, along with hints of ginger and cinnamon, while soft oak tones reveal toasted apples.

    Finish

The finish is medium sweet, malty and slightly dry.

    Poor

Disappointing - you can taste the lack of age - green. I have had a couple of the new packaged Macallans now and none have stood up to the 12 year old classic. Its all about creating more product and revenues now.

    Was expecting more.

Really strung up on this one. I cant really give an in depth review as this is on the other side of my spectrum, preferring the more peaty smokey malts. However I have been given this as a gift, I neither love it nor detest it.

    Surely some mistake!

Thirty five years ago when I was fishing on the Tweed I had a Macallan purporting to be the real deal. The Hotellier sent the bottle back to MacAllan and I received a reply from the the Chief Executive that there had been an error in the changeover on the bottling line and I had wrongly received an inferior whisky. Well it has happened again! The Macallan Gold that I have just opened is beneath comment for such an illustrious name.

    Shame on you Macallan.

Really quite bad, there are basic blends out there that taste far better and are more balanced. A disgrace to the Macallan name.
