The Macallan
Scotland
Single Malt
Macallan's 1824 range has done away with age-statements and instead focuses on the colour of the whisky. The concept being that the older the whisky is the darker it will be... Regardless of how true this really is, it's certainly a great whisky packed with assertive vanilla and citrus flavours.
This bottle was part of a private collection - if you'd like more detailed photos just get in touch!
This burnished gold spirit presents a lemon citrus nose, the orange peel and an interlacing sweetness that softens but doesn't eliminate the zest. A quiet note of vanilla is followed by dark chocolate - more assertive, yet not overly so - with a lingering floral and light oak notes.
Citrus and boiled sweets rule the palate, along with hints of ginger and cinnamon, while soft oak tones reveal toasted apples.
The finish is medium sweet, malty and slightly dry.
I have to bow to the experts below whose expensive tastes I can never reach. For me this is at the top of my price range and thankfully it doesn't disappoint. I've owned this a few years now and keeps getting better. The taste buds just zing and for me I hardly notice the vanilla, but the cinnamon and ginger, wow. Its very smooth, almost sweet, a reminder of Southern Comfort and nights in New Orleans, but with a very subtle kick, enjoy.
Disappointing, though the tin it came in will be useful. Getting a wet sock taste, which is not good.
Agree with folks who said it tastes more like a mediocre blended whisky.
The vanilla was overwhelming and took over everything else.
Awful. I’ve gone through more than a few single malt whiskys in my time and this is no better than a cheap blended whisky. Harsh. If you like this then buy a bottle of Famous Grouse and save yourself some cash.
