The Macallan
Scotland
Single Malt
Amber is part of The Macallan's new no age statement range of Speyside single malts, which concentrates on colour. The theory is that by using 100% sherry casks and natural colour, the darker the whisky, the older and more complex.
This bottle was part of a private collection - if you'd like more detailed photos just get in touch!
Soft aromatic vanilla, lemon and barley with hints of ginger. Milk chocolate buttons and hints of Sun-Maid Raisins.
Surprisingly thick and fruity compared to the nose. Golden sultanas, dates, apple peelings and a dusting of cinnamon. Cereal notes on the mid-palate, joined by mince pies with crumbly shortbread.
Fragrant oak finish, with the mince pie notes lingering.
The second level in the 1824 Series, after the more citrus-led Gold.
When I think about buying a quality Scotch Whisky as an investment or a wee celebration Macallan's are at the top of my shopping list. Why in the name of progress would I buy a "new no age statement" The only statement I get....Not impressed, and I wont be investing
If I were to compare this Amber to the original 12yo, the old still lingers in my mouth while this amber is nothing but an immature rendition of trying to become something it can not. I agree that Macallan has set a standard, but the bean counters have told the Master to figure out a way to begin selling before it's time. Unfortunately in the business world, what rules is the bottom line. I will stock up with the old 12yo and drinks k it to my delight, but I will pass by this Amber and anything related to the new series. Too expensive and lack of body.
I was intrigued by the non-aged concept... it is not a great dram but I've had a lot worst.. the feel of the dram was thick... I would like a stronger burn and taste if I were to covet this dram in my special batch... for a group of friends to hangout and drink a smooth 'light' dram this will do just fine!!!
Purchase base on earlier reviews but frankly found to be only an average experience versus price in Toronto. Not likely to re-purchase as disappointed with the palate. Value not there for me.
I found this a very gentle and smooth expression, and a surprise for a Macallan. Fresh fruit (apple and pear) and dried fruit on the nose gave a wonderful balance. Sweet and vanilla notes on the palette, with a lovely finish. OK, there is not age, but surely it is the quality of the liquid that counts!
