The Macallan
Scotland
Single Malt
Amber is part of The Macallan's new no age statement range of Speyside single malts, which concentrates on colour. The theory is that by using 100% sherry casks and natural colour, the darker the whisky, the older and more complex.
This bottle was part of a private collection - if you'd like more detailed photos just get in touch!
Soft aromatic vanilla, lemon and barley with hints of ginger. Milk chocolate buttons and hints of Sun-Maid Raisins.
Surprisingly thick and fruity compared to the nose. Golden sultanas, dates, apple peelings and a dusting of cinnamon. Cereal notes on the mid-palate, joined by mince pies with crumbly shortbread.
Fragrant oak finish, with the mince pie notes lingering.
The second level in the 1824 Series, after the more citrus-led Gold.
£19.02 - £899.00
Let's get this out of the way: in and of itself, the Amber is not at all bad, hell it's even pretty good, if a bit synthetic and floral in the nose and delivery of the palate. You can tell that this is a scotch trying to taste older than it really is, but it's still good, in a JW Green Label sorta way. It's also clear that the front-line Macallan folks are trying very hard to make a good product and effort was clearly expended on this Amber. The problem is Edrington has lost their minds: it isn't nearly as good as the similarly priced (for us in the USA) Mac12 (which itself is over-priced). This is a good 35 dollar whisky, not a 50 or 60 dollar scotch. Only corporate dictated growth and margin requirements, banking on the brand capital of Macallan, could justify trying to sell this product at this price-point. For customers like me, who considers Mac 12 a staple, if I were confronted (as many customers outside the US have been) with this product suddenly at my local store in place of the 12, at the same price point, I'd simply never buy Macallan again. Regardless of the Amber being a good dram, or Macallan's aged stock versus demand issues pushing them to NAS, at this price-point it's a reputation destroying product for Macallan.
Impressive, so balanced and full of sense. I don't how you dare criticize it. Do we drink the same whisky? On top of that, it's my wife's favorite! It's not bad for 40 euros.
Too pricey; I get the same pleasure from 10 year old Aberlour for half the price. Nice try but you fall flat in my books !
A sweet, easy, everyday drinker - particularly worth saving for a Christmas drink among friends with spicy, mince pie flavours. There are better whiskys at this price but this won't disappoint...
This is the most boring (high quality) whisky I've ever had, and it was expensive too. Hopefully Macallan has something else up their sleeve to justify the hype.
