We're onto the third release from The Lakes Distillery's Whiskymaker's Reserve series, which explores the art of blending and oak maturation! This English single malt was drawn from Oloroso, Pedro Ximénez and cream sherry casks, along with a small number of red wine casks in there too. As such, it's a super aromatic, incense-forward release, bottled up at a healthy 54% ABV.
Fragrant incense leaps from the glass, with dark chocolate biscuits and treacle tart.
Warming oak spice leads into notes of golden syrup, chai spices and date.
Honeyed fruit and cinnamon linger on a warming finish.
It’s a well made spirit, no doubt about that. I just find the floral, incense notes a little too overpowering- lacks balance.
Loved this, smooth, honeyed with a lingering after taste. Extremely moreish
Had a few of the lakes blends and malts now and they have come on leaps and bounds from the early releases which were not much to get excited about to be honest. This seems to fit in with the new house style very well, very fruit driven with aromatic spices and mellow oak. A sense of each oak finish having a well balanced influence here and great mouthfeel/body at 54%. Impressive bit of packaging as well as lovely liquid too.
