Elements is the first Whiskymaker's Project from the Lakes Distillery, designed as a library of whisky learnings to offer people a view into the journey whisky makers go on to create a new single malt. Every whisky here dates back to before the distillery released any single malt, a rare and individually numbered collection of bottles, each of which aims to examine the impact oak has on whisky’s flavour creation. Going across the series, you should be able to detect the nuances of the flavours derived from a multitude of sherry-seasoned casks, how they interact with the new make spirit, and the influence of the Lakes’ local climate and warehousing environment on the maturing whisky.
So, the seven core elements you see before you (in 200ml bottles) are all sherry casks: fino, manzanilla, amontillado, palo cortado, cream, PX, and oloroso. Every other parameter is identical; the oak type (American oak), cask size (500-litre butts), maturing spirit, warehousing conditions, and ABV (54%).
The set also includes an Elements guidebook which offers a background to each sherry wine and how it interacts with the casks and new make spirit, as well as an individually numbered certificate; one of only 1,368 libraries, plus exclusive access to behind-the-scenes content, including an "in-the-making" interview with Elements creator, Dhavall Gandhi.
