Ileach Peaty

The Ileach Peaty (pronounced Eee-luhk) is a young and peaty single malt whisky from a secret Islay distillery, independently bottled by the Vintage Malt Whisky Company. Ileach is what the Islay natives call themselves, and this whisky is Islay through and through. There’s no mucking about here, this is one peaty dram. Of course, it says so in the name.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose Youthful peat, herbal notes, oak, grassy, notes of the coast.

Palate Sublimely smooth malty notes, peat, peppery spices, tannins, a touch of fruit.

Finish Faint iodine. Coastal notes, malt.

Okayish and strange
I am quite enjoying it but one girl told me it smells like hospital bandages and tastes similar, my other friend told me it reminds him of old people's clothes and tastes very strange (none of them serious whisky drinkers)...I find it drinkable but somewhat strange.

Mutton dressed as lamb
I would place this as a marketing gimmick for those seeking a smoky Scotch but unwilling to shell out. Rough at the edges, with a deep colour that shouts artificial. Still enjoyable more geared to those that add ice or a splash of soda, which is probably the best way to consume this. But there again I would say much the same, colour excepted, about the Lagavulin 8y. Priced at the lower end, you gets what you pay for, the Bunnahabhain 12 is not that much more, a big step up, if less “smoky”. .

Very nice.
Wonderful Nose. Peaty, rich, briney, some fruitiness. In a blind tasting my peathead of a friend swore by the nose alone that it's an Ardbeg. The palate is lacking some bite due to 40% ABV, and the finish is medium, somewhat dry and oaky. Good value for money and worth it for the nose alone, lovely.

Sweat & Peat, Excellent Value for Money
Not nearly as peaty as suggested - I would guesstimate that there's 25-30 ppm in here. It's clearly a young dram too, so perhaps not as flavoursome as others. However, there's a nice mix of sweetness and peatness going on that reminds me of Kilchoman Sanaig. Although not quite as beautiful, in my humble opinion this is a solid Islay that offers excellent value for money.

Not enough peat or strength.
Uninspiring, flat and one dimensional. Very similar in profile to the islay offering from Lidl.
Not nearly as peaty as I would prefer, from some
other comments, it is clear that peat isn't for everyone. I wouldn't buy this again. Bought on an auction site, at roughly this price. I suspect it may be a Bowmore from the flavour, which isn't my favourite Islay distillery.

A right solid peaty dram
It is what it says on the tin; a solid peaty number well worth the price. If your looking for complexity and lasting notes, move on and spend £30 more.

Good whisky, tremendous value.
Under £30, couldn’t believe how good it was.
Well done Islay.

“Tastes like tar.”
Gave this to my mum, she thinks it’s wonderful and “tastes like tar”. Apparently this is a good thing! My OH said if steam punk had a smell, it would be this.
