    The Glenlivet Founder's Reserve

First revealed towards the end of 2014, the Founder's Reserve single malt Scotch whisky is now available in the UK and will be replacing The Glenlivet 12 year old in many of the mature markets despite initial indications that it would sit beside it, broadening the entry-level options. Named in tribute to distillery founder George Smith, it's packaged in Georgian blue.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Some dates then what at first appears to be a touch of salinity, but is better described as a slightly sharp plum and apricot wine note. There's orange zest, toffee, hints of struck match and chocolate raisins, but before this starts to sound 'Sherried' there's also pear drops, a dusting of sweet cinnamon, honeysuckle and sweet pea.

    Palate

Fruity, then sweet, more toffee, a touch of anise, then into milk chocolate Flakes, banoffee pie and apple turnovers.

    Finish

Creamy toffee to the fore now, a little oak and sweet barley sugar warmth too. Milk chocolate raisins linger.

    Overall

Perhaps a little sweet, but it would work well with ice where the sweetness would be slightly suppressed - and before you shudder with disgust, Alan Winchester said that he liked his with a little ice sometimes too. And if it's good enough for the Master Distiller...

Reviews for The Glenlivet Founder's Reserve

Love the aroma, and has a robust palate. My favourite Single Malt Scotch Whisky!

    Excellent at the price.

I think this whisky has improved over time. I bought a bottle when it was first introduced, I was very unimpressed. I bought again yesterday and I get better vibes. A lovely smooth, sweet dram. Very approachable and straightforward. If you tried this five or six years ago, give it another try. You might just be surprised. I certainly will.

    Vindicated by the notes

I didnt like this at first. Too harsh bitter and ethanol up front. After leaving open for a few months and then drinking with a single small ice cube, i can now enjoy. And I do enjoy. Some nice flavours. The tasting notes above are fairly accurate if not a little elaborate. I get nice pear and toffee with some orange peel turning things slightly too bitter even still. Probably won't buy again buy will finish the bottle for sure!

    Bland, bland bland!

The Glenlivet was one of my least favourite malts years ago, but I was recently given a bottle of this as a Christmas present. Not to seem ungrateful; but I wish the gifter had paid some attention to which brand(s) I usually drink. Anyway, I can find no saving graces in this 'reserve' (reserved for the undiscerning whisky novice perhaps?). It's just sweet and fiery at the same time, with no complexity. A slightly fruity, citrus nose, followed by almost no palate appeal. The sweetness dominates and could easily come from adding a dash of syrup to a cheap grain whisky blend. Finish? What finish?

    Bananarama

This seemed quite nice at first. Smooth, quite complex for the money but with a little too much raw oak to my taste. Sadly, a persistent banana flavour came through after a short time and I changed my opinion. I did not really enjoy this. I was surprised by the polarisation in the reviews below at first and I can only understand it if there is a lot of batch variation.
