Glenlivet Founder's Bottling Note

First revealed towards the end of 2014, the Founder's Reserve single malt Scotch whisky is now available in the UK and will be replacing The Glenlivet 12 year old in many of the mature markets despite initial indications that it would sit beside it, broadening the entry-level options. Named in tribute to distillery founder George Smith, it's packaged in Georgian blue.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Some dates then what at first appears to be a touch of salinity, but is better described as a slightly sharp plum and apricot wine note. There's orange zest, toffee, hints of struck match and chocolate raisins, but before this starts to sound 'Sherried' there's also pear drops, a dusting of sweet cinnamon, honeysuckle and sweet pea.

Palate: Fruity, then sweet, more toffee, a touch of anise, then into milk chocolate Flakes, banoffee pie and apple turnovers.

Finish: Creamy toffee to the fore now, a little oak and sweet barley sugar warmth too. Milk chocolate raisins linger.

Overall: Perhaps a little sweet, but it would work well with ice where the sweetness would be slightly suppressed - and before you shudder with disgust, Alan Winchester said that he liked his with a little ice sometimes too. And if it's good enough for the Master Distiller...

Reviews for The Glenlivet Founder's Reserve
smooth and creamy
Smooth creamy and easy to drink. Not as good as the harsher yet taster 12.

Ideal when you’re already past your best and your tastebuds are dead
Pretty average. Especially compared to the 12 and 15. Peach, banana and cream but the finish is so thin.

Agree that it's on the sweet but it is not cloyingly so, overall a nice dram.

Above average light enjoyable
A bit of an ethanol taste for the first sip. Then it changes to a more fruity and sweet taste. It finishes of with a creamy smooth vanilla after taste.
To make it considerably more complex, enjoy it with a dark chocolate. Suddenly, you have strong hints of liquorice and raisins. Generally light and enjoyable.

enjoyable and affordable
IGNORE the negative reviews from the Whisky snobs. Smooth, easy drinking, yes not complex, but completely pleasant. The best in this price point that I've had.

Very nice
dont think Glen12 or 15 here but instead something different. Yet very pleasant smooth, nothing over powering at all and certainly lives on the lighter side but just the right amount of everything. Good taste and good slight aftertaste. Very nice.

Excellent at the price.
I think this whisky has improved over time. I bought a bottle when it was first introduced, I was very unimpressed. I bought again yesterday and I get better vibes. A lovely smooth, sweet dram. Very approachable and straightforward. If you tried this five or six years ago, give it another try. You might just be surprised. I certainly will.

Vindicated by the notes
I didnt like this at first. Too harsh bitter and ethanol up front. After leaving open for a few months and then drinking with a single small ice cube, i can now enjoy. And I do enjoy. Some nice flavours. The tasting notes above are fairly accurate if not a little elaborate. I get nice pear and toffee with some orange peel turning things slightly too bitter even still. Probably won't buy again buy will finish the bottle for sure!
