Whiskies produced by distilleries that have closed their doors for the final time has a tendency to become legendary liquid, highly sought after by collectors and cognoscenti alike. These storied parcels of rare spirit might sit forever in dark warehouses, forgotten to all like a mythical Zweihänder in a wizard's long-since abandoned subterranean lair. However, sometimes these whiskies escape the darkness and make their way out to enthusiast's hands, and that's what has happened here.
The Lost Distilleries Blend is an award-winning blended Scotch whisky crafted exclusively with rare and exciting whiskies from closed distilleries. Now on its 11th batch, this celebrated blend continues to provide whisky lovers with a taste of whisky no longer available to those of us in this particular timeline - a thoroughly fascinating prospect. This batch features malt whisky from Caperdonich, Rosebank, Imperial, Mosstowie, Glen Mhor, Glenisla, Glenlochy, Craigduff, Port Ellen and Brora, along with grain whisky from Port Dundas.
Batch 11 is a release of 600 bottles.
The nose is all bread and butter pudding with plenty of dried fruit and vanilla ice-cream initially, before ripe banana and custard apple develop. Distinctive damp grass and polished oak emerge underneath among some creamy cashew nuttiness, white chocolate and lemon sherbets.
Thick, honeyed and deep, with zesty orange peel, candied rhubarb and a layer of darker fruits. Oak spices begin to grow as the palate progresses with helpings of bittersweet dark chocolate, menthol tobacco and the slightest forest floor note.
A final lick of heather honey appears in a very long, juicy and ripe finish.
A real stunner – this blend is rich, soft, slow and complex.
It's that time of year again. Advent Calendar Time...and it looks like Masters of Malt want to start things off on a high note. I'm not usually a fan of blends, I find they tend to be a tad wersh. Wersh...its a good word, meaning "bland" or "insipid". I have a bottle of Batch 6, and it's cracking, so I'm looking forward to this. I've gotten out the good whisky glass and here we go... The nose is like a buttery mix of sultana and raisins...that's an image of a winter pudding to get the arteries panicking, a hint of sugar and lemon. Fruity, a bit of cream and citrus. It's quite thick on the palatte, keeping the fruits and the citrus, a little spice, all flowing into a nice, complex honeyed finish with an aftertaste of chocolate darker than Darth Vaders jimjams. The heat is on the tongue and warms the throat without needing a burn. So not wersh at all. Very delicious, complicated but not overly so.
