The Lost Distilleries Blend - Batch 6

A truly extraordinary award-winning series continues - behold, Batch 6 of the Lost Distilleries Blend. This spectacular blended Scotch whisky is produced solely using whiskies from some of the most renowned, though sadly closed, Scottish distilleries and the result is a dram that undoubtedly lives up to their lofty legacies.

Batch 6 features malt whiskies from Mosstowie, Port Ellen, Glenisla, Imperial, Caperdonich, Glen Mhor and Brora, and grain whiskies from Port Dundas. All are ennobled and celebrated in their own right, with surviving stocks of their spirit becoming scarcer year on year. The Lost Distilleries Blend honours these gone-but-not-forgotten greats with impeccable balance and a sublime flavour profile worthy of their names.

This is a limited release of 534 bottles.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

A little green apple and then manuka honey lead the way, with the depth of this blend soon becoming apparent. Grassy sand dunes, lemon, dried coconut and papaya develop, adding complexity to the bag of gorgeous vanilla fudge you now hold in your hand.

    Palate

Toffee apples and chamois leather. A drop of water here reveals thicker, chewy toffees, great mouthfeel, a generous sprinkling of nutmeg and a little cinnamon alongside praline, which becomes nut toffee or peanut crunch towards the tail.

    Finish

Soft, slightly tannic, nutty oak and a hint of dignified smoke. Salted toffee too, that's almost vaguely coastal.

    Overall

This is very yummy whisky indeed. Created exclusively with whiskies from now-closed distilleries, it's also a piece of history. A very yummy piece of history.

    Insane

Best of the advent calendar so far. The nose is so spicy, dried cinnamon and cardamom, also green apples. The palate is definitely super creamy, even thick, it's almost viscous, I definitely agree on toffee apples, almost caramel, a bit sweet. Then the finish is so long, light oak, caramel, very different from the nose. Splendid.

    Why compare to Blue?

I hesitate to even mention Johnnie Walker Blue in my comments because it is an irrelevant comparison. A 2016 Camaro is a nice car and you can order one in whatever color you want and you know exactly what you will get. You can't order a 1969 Camaro, however. Part of the mystique of Scotch is its history and rarity and you cannot create a mass-produced premium spirit that has the history that these these gems from Lost Distilleries possess. That said, this is a beautiful and wonderfully unique whisky, both in its historical significance and in its experience. The apple crisp in the nose is something very unusual and delightful that I have never before encountered in the scores of fine single malts (and yes, even some blends) that I have had the privilege to sample. I am so glad I got to experience David Bowie performing live. That chance will not ever happen again. Want to experience Batch 6 and compare it to the Blue that you can buy down the street? Sorry . . . you can't get Batch 6 anymore.

    Tasty!

Complicated. Good whisky. Fresh smell of a vanilla spring, with the lightest of malted smokiness that plays into other flavors. On the other hand, its nose immediately reminds me of Crown Royal, as does its taste, and well... Crown is a lot cheaper. Great notes of vanilla and sweet honey. Taste is a little spicy, tart apple, with a good chocolaty chew. Wraps up with a clean aftertaste, just enough smoke, and then lingers just long enough not to overwhelm. Great whisky, but I wonder if it tries too much by being high priced and complicated. Final Note: I am doing the 2015 advent calendar. As a result, I get one drink at it to decide if I like it enough to buy more. Sometimes I need to drink something three or four times to make up my mind. Thus, my rating is based on a one-time drink experience.

Not close to Johnnie Walker Blue

It's smooth and classy. Carmel and red apples dominate the nose. Toffee starts midway through and continues to the medium-length finish. Is it a nice blend? Absolutely, and of course it's a piece of history. But it's not on the same planet as Johnnie Walker Blue, and the comparison is frankly an insult to Blue. This would be great value at $80 a bottle. $450 a bottle is absolutely ridiculous.

    Better than Jonnie Walker Blue

There's the same touch of smoke but this feels much thicker and more mouth-coating.
