Talisker 10 year old single malt is a classic Island whisky from the Isle of Skye. Aged for a minimum of 10 years in American oak casks, this welcome member of Diageo's Classic Malts series has been recognised numerous times for its excellence. Immensely satisfying stuff, with whiffs of warm peat blending with coastal air, balanced by orchard fruit and juicy barley. A spectacular after dinner dram.
It was an Editor's Choice at Whisky Magazine, a gold medal winner at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2017 and was awarded 'Best Islands Single Malt' at the 2017 World Whiskies Awards.
A fresh and fragrant nose. Through thick, pungent smoke comes sweet pear and apple peels, with pinches of maritime salt from kippers, seaweed.
It's a bonfire of peat crackling with black pepper, with a touch of brine and dry barley. A welcome delivery of orchard fruit provides a delicate and beautiful balance.
In a long finish, bonfire embers toast malt and crystallise a sugary underlay.
Used to love Talisker but based on this latest offering I won't be buying this again, what was once a delightful attack on your taste buds is now rather bland by comparison. It's a shame because it used be one of my favourite go to whisky's.
I have tried the older Talisker 10 and yes, it was a little lighter in color and bolder in palate. Change sometimes works for the better. I found the newer version more complex with similar peat, smoke and savoury palate. Too bad this improvement was reflected in the price. Delicious.
Nose: 2 words, fish marker Taste: peaty, spicy Finish: same old
Sorry but really poor. Used to love this but unsure what's happened. Compared it to JW green label and it tasted very rough and unrefined.
Talisker 10 still has one of the most inviting noses in all of the Scotch I've sampled. However, the actual juice is becoming very tired. I fear recent batches have been relying on 2nd/3rd re-fill casks which is robbing all character from the whisky. Then at the bottling plant, enough E150a is added to make an Oompa-Loompa plush. A subtle amount isn't noticeable but this quantum leaves an unmistakable burnt sugar note and leaves me with an instant headache. Shame. I hope things improve as unfortunately Talisker in the IB market is rarer than hen's teeth.
