    Single Malt

    Shirakawa 1958

This is arguably the most rare Japanese whisky in the world, and it's certainly one of the most remarkable we've ever seen. Presented by Tomatin Distillery, this spirit comes from the old Shirakawa Distillery, which was established in 1947 and demolished in 2003. This 1958 Single Malt was made during a period when the distillery was one of the first in Japan to make malt whisky, but it was typically destined for blends. What we have here is the first time the whisky has been presented for sale as a single malt.

Shirakawa 1958 was aged in cask, then transferred to ceramic jars at the distillery before being transferred into stainless steel tanks at Takara Shuzo’s factory in Kyushu where it lay untouched until now. The type of cask and length of maturation remains unknown, but we can reveal the 1958 vintage is bottled at 49% ABV and is said to have an “expansive” palate, with “a succulent texture and hints of fragrant grass”.

One of the best noses, hints of spices and lemon and grows

I was lucky enough to try the 1958 recently at a tasting evening and it has a fantastic nose, one of the best no doubt at all, and body of flavour with spices and a hint of lemon that grows. You will not be disappointed if you get the opportunity to do likewise.

    History in a Bottle

Was fortunate enough to taste this at an event recently and found this to be unique and one of its kind whisky. It has a delicate taste to it with citrus peels and tropical waves. Also noticed unlike any other whisky this had layers and layers of character to it. Every sip was magical as it developed in the glass. Fantastic find and superb story, it gives you a good insight into the history of Japanese whisky making. This is probably the best I have tasted in my lifetime.

Incredible whisky with an incredible back story. One of a kind.

An extraordinary whisky which I had the pleasure of tasting last week. A fantastic nose with oak and spices on the palate and as good as the best Japanese whisky I have tasted. The romantic story of its find and bottling adds to the allure.
