Speyside 6 Year Old 2015 Single Cask (Master of Malt) 40%

We just wrote the tasting note for this one, and then had to double-check our maths to make sure that the price is really right. Good news – it is, making this a truly bargainous treat from the Speyside Distillery. The relatively young age allows the malt to shine with rewarding layers of cream, toasted coconut, pastry, and vanilla, and barely a shade of spice. Distilled in 2015, the whisky matured for six years in a refill hogshead, and now a total of 531 bottles join our own collection of exclusive releases.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Homemade rice pudding – nice and creamy. Soft stone fruits with yellow plums and apricot supported by generous helpings of vanilla.

    Palate

A superbly elegant start, with a wash of orange butter and vanilla cream followed by fresh, fruit-filled pastries, and oaty biscuits.

    Finish

Anzac biscuits arrive towards the end, joined by delicately floral malt. Sweet baking spices rest in the distance, with rich, syrupy sponge cake at the core.

    Worth every penny!

I've imbibed single-malts for a few years now and, whilst this 6 YO 'Speyside' is not the most distinctive or tasty that's passed my taste-buds, it is indeed quite delightful, irrespective of price, and worth every penny of the twenty quid. It's so lovely I would not even use it as a mixer, it deserves more appreciation that that! It ain't complex, at 6YO why would it be, but is a more than enjoyable dram, and one that I love as a simple untaxing nightcap, with some lovely toffee, vanilla and cream notes. It is not harsh to my palate, and even a tiny spot of H2O does not kill it and, if anything, helps it blossom - as the comment below says "If you are looking for a strong flavoured smoky/peaty single malt look elsewhere.", and you'd be totally missing the point of this one... I'm on my third bottle, and very happy to see it alongside my Tobermory, Lagavulin, Bunnahabhain, Clynelish, Talisker, etc!

    Personally, I love it.

To be blunt, this is just gorgeous. And at this price its a give away. If you are looking for a strong flavoured smoky/peaty single malt look elsewhere. This is not for you. If you are looking for a soft smooth easy to drink and very satisfying whisky to sip and savour than fill your boots. I for one will be buying more.

    Curiouser and curiouser

This is an interesting little whisky. Upon opening the bottle I was hit by an almost white wine sweetness on the nose. To taste, initially there was no hiding the age; a little rough around the edges with not much flavour. But the more I sipped, the stronger the flavours became, with delicate vanilla and cream sweetness. Whilst its not terribly complex, it is sweet and is really growing on me. Foe the price, I'm pretty delighted with it.

You get what you pay for

The old adage "You get what you pay for" has never been truer than with this thin, insipid and totally uninspiring dram. Some faint confectionary notes but that's it. Very disappointing.
