This 10 year old single malt was a gold medal winner at the 2006 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. A classic from the Speyburn distillery.
A fruity nose with hints of orange, mandarin and cooking apple. A touch of oak, peppermint and spice.
A light, gentle palate with soft malt, sweet, toasty barley with liquorice and dried herbs.
Just a touch of smoke trails off on the finish.
Nice easy to drink scotch. Not boring. Just keep it in you mouth long enough. Well worth the money.
Speyburn 10 year. What a great bottle. Not outstanding in the least but certainly outperforms EVERY other spirit at the price point. Many a drams of Speyburn 10 helped me write my essays in uni and I think it serves as a perfect "first" single malt. I found it in my local supermarket for 17 dollars a bottle and always stocked up while I could. Is it worth 30, 40, or even 50 dollars? That's up to you to decide when it's pitted against different competition in those different price brackets. But compared to the atrocious rotgut of grain blends, Johnnie Walker red, canadian "whisky", and lord knows what other pig swill you can get for the price, it wins every single time. The flavor is everything you want in a speyside. Citrus, floral notes, a bit of honey -- all that nonsense. In reality it's simply a great whisky to have on hand for any occasion. Don't waste that Glenlivet 18 on someone who doesn't know single malt from blend from non age statement from cask strength. Give them a Speyburn 10 and see where it goes. You even owe it to yourself to have one if you're not an absolute whisky snob or are trying to get into single malts without breaking the bank. Lovely stuff... 3.5/5 for flavor 5/5 for price Highly, highly recommended.
For the price and availability, this is a solid whisky.
This is a great scotch - not just “for the money” It’s bold and flavorful - amazing nose — I have more then a dozen bottles of scotch at all times and Speyburn 10 is always one of them.
This is a long way from my usual peaty/smoky tatse, other end of the scale. I bought it to top off my bulk order and try something new....it was cheap after all. On opening the nose was like Sherry, straight away thought this is going to be too sweet for me. The palate however although still sweet, not as much as the nose. Almost an oriental taste, interesting, very interesting. Fruity with a spicy after taste. Drop an ice cube in it and it opens a world of spice n sweet flavours with an underlying subtle smoke (don't pick it up without the ice/water) As say not my usual tatse. However worth every penny at 30 quid, easy drinking and an interesting tatse experience. Mixed reviews on here, but think the ice/water is the key.....transforms it to a totally different drink. Would make good gift as can tempt palates from all ends of the spectrum. A crowd pleaser.
