Behold, batch 4 of Seaweed & Aeons & Digging & Fire & Cask Strength, weighing in at a hefty 58.3% ABV. This expression is made with a 10 year old single malt from Islay (no hints as to which distillery, mind), with 25% of it having enjoyed a stint in sherry casks, lending some welcome sweetness to the earthy, smoky, robust whisky. The bumped-up ABV of the cask strength edition adds some weight behind it all, making for a full-bodied, satisfying, intense expression. Plus, an extra ampersand, which may be the most exciting bit of punctuation out there, only contested by the at sign.
Roasted fruit and driftwood notes jump out of the glass, with hints of apricot jam on oatcakes and gingerbread in support.
The coastal core remains solid on the palate with seaweed and flaky salt, mellowed slightly by waves of sultanas, dates, and a touch of mocha.
A meaty hint lingers on the finish, with cinnamon and chocolate peanuts.
There's loads to love here, from the powerful coastal influence to the flashes of sherried brightness.
So good that after the first glass I bought a second bottle. Really hit the spot for me. It’s nice to have something unique from Isla once in a while
Ardbeg cask strength? Packed with hearty flavours, definitely a tiny notch off down the smoky/peat as compared to ardbeg but nonetheless an amazing whisky! HMmmmmmmm....Absolutely delicious!
Didn't like this one. Disappointing.
Bought this for a friend who is an experienced whisky lover with a penchant for Islay malts. He was really impressed and rates it as one of the best bottles he has had at any price.
I've just tasted this at cask strength alongside a Corryvreckan. The first thing I noticed is it is considerable darker in colour than the Corry. Both have a wonderful texture that helps the flavours linger and the layers emerge on the tongue. Just when I was thinking the Seaweed doesn't quite have the oomph of the Corry it lit a fruity fire......then threw some sugar, salt, and cinnamon in. A touch of water helped soften and separate the flavours but without impacting the finish, which is ridiculously long, kind of like the credits on a modern movie. I'm still getting echoes 20 minutes later, and that after having a cup of camomile tea! So, with all that said, does it knock Corry off its perch? Not quite: I find the Corry seems more able to release its flavours in perfectly timed waves, where the Seaweed for me delivers them pretty much straight after each other. On balance I preferred it unwatered. It is truly a fabulous dram and one I'll bring out for special occasions and people.
