Scapa distilled in October of 1993 and bottled in June of 2009 after 15 years spent in a refill hogshead. This was bottled for Douglas Laing's Old Malt cask range, and is a release of 307 bottles.
Fresh and crisp with lots of polished malt, oaky spice, black pepper and wood resin.
Lightly woody, hints of fruit, butterscotch, sweet spices.
Thick, good length with hints of throat lozenges and butter, spice.
It's OK. A good-mannered whiskey you'd introduce your mom to. Firework smoke, champagne and some apples in the nose. Honey cake, pastry, creamy bun filling and rhubarb in the mouth. Crisp and champagne-y.
A big, rich, modern day Scapa nose of vanilla oak and overkill malt along with some sweet honey, burnt wood and heather. There is also quiet a bit of medicinal peat which is unusual and only vaguely coastal, which is par for the course. The palate is immense and robust, full of herbal honey, vanillins and heather. It opens into a lovely melange of mandarin and pineapple, before the malt kicks in and the honey returns ‘en vigueur’ It has a good length with an almost peppery/grainy spirit note at the end and a suggestion of salt.
