I love the idea of smoky, peaty whisky...but I don't get on with the TCP/Iodine tang in a lot of them...so I tend to gravitate towards sweeter, less peaty whisky. This Raasay has that balance...it is smoky, it is peaty...but is sweet, with caramel and toast undertones. In this price range this is amazing. I find the flavour profile just gets better and better...the 2nd dram is lush.. Sorry MoM...I don't get any flint or pebbles. What does flint taste of anyway :-) (I do love your tasting notes)

Description

It's the flagship single malt from the Isle of Raasay Distillery, the first legal distillery to operate on the eponymous island. Peated and unpeated Raasay spirits are individually matured in a combination of rye whiskey, chinkapin oak, and Bordeaux red wine casks, before being married together for this exceptional dram. Taking influence from the older styles of Hebridean single malts, this expression is lightly peated, with a fragrant balance of dark berries and delicate smoke – superb stuff from the young distillery.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose

Baked plums, red apples, and cherries lead to drying wood smoke with earthy vanilla and a hint of flint.

Palate

Pebbly minerality with crisp peat smoke, sweet, dark caramel, and biscuity malt. Creamy oak and peppery barley tangle beneath.

Finish

Just a subtle whiff of smoke on the finish, cushioned by salted nuts, chewy butterscotch, and sweet oak char.
