Port Askaig
Scotland
Single Malt
Launched in 2015, the Port Askaig 100° Proof is a big, smoky single malt Scotch whisky from an undisclosed Islay distillery. This is bottled at 57.1% ABV - which is 100° Proof in a traditional system of alcohol content measurement (different from 100 proof, which you're much more likely to see on American bottlings).
Earthy smoke rises first, shortly followed by smoked meats, citrus peels and a heaped spoonful of brown sugar.
Zesty lemon and lime, paired with ground cumin, Smiths Bacon Fries and a touch of apple juice.
Rather long and enjoyably soot-y.
This is terrific, I think. I'm a Caol Ila drinker and I'd be very surprised if this wasn't theirs, it has much of the 12 year-old's character but a bit more assertive. Very very good, loads of smoke and spice, a proper after dinner scotch.
Very light and mature for what seems to be a young whisky, for the clear color and no obvious wood notes. I like the light smell, something different than the usual peat monsters we see in Islay. The peat is clearly there (fresh grass and pipe), but all the whisky is light in itself. Other than that I could get green grapes. The finishing taste is not long, but the abv is so high you can enjoy the warmth in your mouth longer.
Nose: cold smoke, salt, bacon, vinegear in the background Palate: increasing smoke, very spicy, alcoholic and notes of citrus Finish: much smoke, bacon, much pepper, oak, very long All in All: A very good Islay. He's a little bit like the "Port Charlotte Islay Barley" but far away from his deepness and balance.
Lovely an explosion of taste in the mouth second only to Ardbeg corryvreckan shame about the nose. Best nose port Askaig 14 year
It seems too obvious that Port Askaig is a stones throw from Caolila, but I have a reliable source that says it is not from that distillery. From tasting I have no idea, to me it's like a smoky Bunnahabhain maybe along the lines of Macphails Collection 8 y.o.
