Matured in ex-bourbon casks for 12 years, this Old Pulteney malt was a Double Gold winner at the 2006 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
Crisp and clean. Great balance reveals notes of herbs and grist. Parsley, almond.
Balanced with medium body. Musty, nutty, sultana, toffee, spices. Oak.
Medium, oak, spices.
Really wanted to fall in love with Old Pulteney, but no. Unfortunately not. Not for me.
Creamy, salty, sweet with a hint of salt. It a great dram at a great price.
A tasty, consistent treat which blows the doors off of more highly priced competitors.
I've bought this s a few times over the years as it's often on discount in Scottish supermarkets. Current bottle was bought in Durness for £24; a bargain, and in a wee independent store near the whisky's home in Wick! I'd say that Highland Park from o'er the water in Orkney still has the edge but, if you fancy a change, this one is well worth a punt. It has a definite maritime quality and is less sweet than HP. Other expressions previously only found in airports are starting to turn up in merchants' shops and one or two supermarkets.
@maltmondays The Nose; Modest yet noticeable sea-air. Maritime fruits, those luxury tropical imports only the wealthy could once afford such as Apricots, lychee & pineapple. Theres a crispness like a clean Marlborough grape Sauvignon Blanc. The Taste; Well balanced & remarkably clean. This scotch has a tight well defined body. Theres lemon as well as a return of tropical fruits. Nuts such as Almonds appear & they mix well with new creamy honey & vanilla notes. The barley textures here are genuinely unique, stodgy and moorish, like a thick milk chocolate cake or fudge. The Finish; Medium length. That briny soft sea saltiness returns. It’s very subtle yet has a maturity beyond its humble 12 year age statement. Theres a understated spice in the linger. A spice wrapped delicately in Oak & Herbs, think fresh parsley & basil
