While most distilleries use their Coffey stills only to make grain whisky, Nikka use the two Coffey stills at their Miyagikyo distillery to create malt whisky too. The Nikka Coffey Malt Whisky was introduced to their selection of expressions in 2014. Plenty rich and flavoursome, it's a wonderful addition to Nikka's fantastic range.

I found this whisky to be a complete new dimension of malted barley distillate. Neither japanese or scotch, just a thing on its own. Extreamly malty, deep and mellow, sweet, though elegant and layered. May be a somewhat similar to Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban, but more elaborated and elegant.
Fantastic. There is a mild burn that may discourage a few but it's easily tempered with a drop of water and then it's just a joy: biscuit-y, vanilla-laced, good length and lovely finish. Skip dessert and have a double of this. If there is such as a thing as comfort food for whisky, I've found it.
Nose: Spiced phenolic ringlet. Banana. A putrid random note. Palate: Luxurious flow of sweet fruits. It thick and you won't want to swallow this whiskey....just swivel all day. After: This is resting between courses in the finest restaurant...marvellous.
Love it, wish it was more freely available
After tasting many scotch whiskies, I ventured out and tried two Japanese whisky, the Nikka Coffey Malt and the Suntory Hibiki Japanese Harmony. I was surprised at how bad the Nikka Coffey Malt (yes it's the malt and not the grain bottle) tasted. Raw alcohol taste and it was very much like Vodka or the Korean Soju. Doesn't taste like whisky to me, maybe just a hint. Lots of burning in the mouth with very little long-lasting taste. I do not like it and cannot finish my bottle. I don't understand how this won any awards or recommended. Paid $79 here in the US.
