Monkey Shoulder is a blended malt Scotch whisky from William Grant & Sons, crafted using single malts from Glenfiddich, Balvenie, and Kininvie—no grain whisky in sight. First launched in 2003 as a bartender-friendly alternative to traditional blends, it was aged in first-fill bourbon barrels and blended in small batches to create a smooth, versatile profile ideal for cocktails.
With bold branding that broke away from Scotch’s stuffy image, it became a trailblazer in the early 2000s whisky renaissance. Since then, it’s expanded with variants like Smokey Monkey and Fresh Monkey, keeping the brand fresh and relevant.
Designed for mixing, Monkey Shoulder enhances classic whisky cocktails (where it really excels) like an Old Fashioned or a Whisky Sour. If you're after a whisky that's fun, full of flavour, and has a bit of history behind it, then pick up a bottle of Monkey Shoulder. You won't be disappointed!
Its quirky name nods to a repetitive strain injury once suffered by maltmen turning barley by hand.
An elegant, stylish nose of marmalade, Crema Catalana (apologies, but it really is there), cocoa and malt. Plenty of vanilla and a sprinkling of winter spice (nutmeg, cloves and cinnamon) alongside a mouth-watering hint of aniseed.
Very malty, creamy delivery with a suggestion of berry fruit. Juicy toasted barley, cloves and butterscotch. Manuka honey, hot-buttered-toast and dried apricot develop.
Medium length, spicy oak and a hint of peppermint on the tail.
This is whisky to be enjoyed. According to the Monkey Shoulder website: "Some say it tastes just like riding bareback on the wild moors of Scotland with a flame-haired maiden on Christmas morning. Others agree it tastes like 007 wearing a tuxedo wetsuit."

Like the title says, I'm a Bourbon man. Historically, I only likes scotches that have been aged over 12 years (and usually cost over $110 a bottle). As such, I didn't have much expectations for monkey shoulder because I didn't think something so affordable could be so good. I was wrong.. This stuff is dangerously smooth and just all around pleasant. It also didn't give me a hang-over when I "accidentally" drank way too much in one sitting. This will likely be what I put in my tailgate flask, with just a splash of water (if we ever have in-person football again)... Honestly, I am only on this website now because monkey shoulder is so good, it got me wondering what else in the scotch spectrum might I also be missing out on. FYI: I almost never give something a 1 or 5 star rating be
Not normally what I would gravitate towards...but I am glad I did. It's very well priced...almost too easy to drink and surprisingly elegant. I really like it. My more high end stuff will last a bit longer as a result which is always good.
Pretty good value at the price and I think that creamy is a good description. It's nicely balanced and there is nothing unpleasant about it but I tasted it immediately after a dram of Bunnahabhain 12 (a favourite of mine) and by comparison I found it lacking in complexity and character, and short on the finish. It's not a bad introduction to vatted malt but don't expect anything very interesting.
Very much liked this malt as it was not as harsh as most malts. A neighbour friend introduced me to it and it will be my favourite for a long time.
A blend this good should be on your top shelf. Made from a blend of a 3 single malts -Balvenie, Glenfidich and Kininvie makes this a Speyside charm. Taste more of the malty notes than any other blended Scotch. Honey, vanilla, toffee and wood make this a cracker of a dram!
