The Laphroaig PX Cask is made with whisky matured in three types of cask - American oak casks, Quarter casks and the titular Pedro Ximénez casks. This leads to a flavour profile which ties together classic, powerful Laphroaig smoke and wine-like sweetness. It was originally released for Travel Retail.

A wonderful Laphroaig even for people who think they don't like it. Softer, balanced with a warmth and sweetness that is very unexpected from this Islay distillery. One of my favourite releases in recent years.
Nose: surprisingly smooth with Sherry and vanilla, in the next moment bacon, salt and smoke (typical Laphroig) Palate: in the beginning floral with hints of Sherry. One moment of silence. Then voluminous spicy smoke. Later more and more and more very spicy and smoky. Finish: harsh and dry smoke (like cold coal). After 5 seconds "second-hit" with more coal. It ends with the feeling of campfire in your mouth and throat All in All: I had to cry after this one! It's the most evil and guileful whisky I've ever tried - I love him!
A very nice, smooth expression of Laphroaig. Unfortunately I have only had one measure of it on a ferry because the price of a bottle seems excessive for what you get.
The heart of this expression lies in its sherry not its smoke. The first hits of smoke on the palette bring an unsophisticated acridness but giving it a little water (which I rarely do) reveals a candied sweetness that the peat works hard to hide. Not overly complex but less robust than one might expect from a Laphroaig. More than meets the eye but not mind blowing.
