The Laphroaig PX Cask is made with whisky matured in three types of cask - American oak casks, Quarter casks and the titular Pedro Ximénez casks. This leads to a flavour profile which ties together classic, powerful Laphroaig smoke and wine-like sweetness. It was originally released for Travel Retail.
If you're a Laphroaig fan and you see this one in an airport, do yourself a favour and pick up a bottle. It's essentially the Quarter Cask with a third maturation in PX casks, so it's all the smoke and peat and awesomeness of the QC with a subtle layer of sherried sweetness woven in. A triumphant NAS whisky from Laphroaig.
Well.. I've tasted the 10 and 18 year old, select, QA, quarter cask and triple wood but this.. I don't know where I should place it. A little.. parfume on the nose? but otherwise it smell typical laphroaig. It's more the taste that is hard to really say what it taste like.. I like the QA more but this is a very intresting whiskey.. worth a try if you find it on taxfree.
Easily one of the best. I don't like the QC and Select Cask all that much...they seem to be thin, and one dimensional to me. THIS on the other hand is simply mind blowing - sherry and medicinal peat on the nose. Sweetness...Almost port wine, dark fruit jam on the palate puts the peat in the background....Spice and pepperbombs, a note of butter? Oily? Decently long finish, slightly astringent and spicy. Ohh...One more sip...
I would like to alert clinically fractose intolerant diagnosed individuals that the PX product appears to be unsuitable. This is possible due to the third stage maturation in sherry casks where residual fractose in the barrel may leach into the whisky and become a source of adverse reaction to the consumer. It is suggested that contact be made to the manufacturer to confirm whether this product is suitable especially if you have a known fractose intolerance.
Arguabky the best I've ever had. Beautifully balanced at a very high tempo. Nose opens with peat, palate explodes with sherry, and finishes with big oak and bourbon. Unbelievable
