    Laphroaig Oak Select

For the Laphroaig Oak Select, the Islay distillery has taken whisky from a number of different types of cask, including oloroso sherry butts, white American oak, Pedro Ximenez seasoned hoggies, quarter casks, and first-fill bourbon casks. Quite a selection, wouldn't you say? A laid-back addition to the Laphroaig core range of single malts.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Classic, medicinal peat notes up front, supported by citrus-y, chocolate-y sweet notes and soft barley.

    Palate

The peat is there, but it's taking it easy and letting the bright notes of lemon, green apples and mint stand out. Darker baking spice notes develop further on.

    Finish

Medium length, peat remaining in sight until it's over.

    Overall

It doesn't pack a huge punch of peat, which might be just the ticket for introducing someone to the wonders of Islay's smoky expressions.

Not a patch on their other stuff

My parents ask what I want for Christmas, I say Laphroaig, but they get this wood flavoured vodka instead. It's not worth the £3 you're saving, get the proper stuff.

    Disappointed

Smells and tastes as Dettol antiseptic. Not that great...

    Disappointed

No where near the 10 year old a high disappointment where is the peat. Just a hint in the pallet nothing on the nose . Bad buy should have gone for the 10 year old

    Stop whinging!

I thought this was really quite delicious especially after getting slowly towards the second half of the bottle. Total bargain at £23. Why compare it to the 10 then get upset if it’s not the same. Stop whinging! It also makes a really excellent Old Fashioned!

    Unique

Tried this after Quarter Cask. It's not as good but does satisfy the urge for a smoky whisky. Nose: smoky, sea salt, anti-septic (strange indeed but is pleasant on the nose). Palate: sea salt, apple. Finish: Long, peat and smoked fish. Strange, unique but ultimately satisfying. Have to be in the mood for it.
