For the Laphroaig Oak Select, the Islay distillery has taken whisky from a number of different types of cask, including oloroso sherry butts, white American oak, Pedro Ximenez seasoned hoggies, quarter casks, and first-fill bourbon casks. Quite a selection, wouldn't you say? A laid-back addition to the Laphroaig core range of single malts.
Classic, medicinal peat notes up front, supported by citrus-y, chocolate-y sweet notes and soft barley.
The peat is there, but it's taking it easy and letting the bright notes of lemon, green apples and mint stand out. Darker baking spice notes develop further on.
Medium length, peat remaining in sight until it's over.
It doesn't pack a huge punch of peat, which might be just the ticket for introducing someone to the wonders of Islay's smoky expressions.

For those who shy away from heavily peated whisky this is an excellent start to help acclimate the nose and palete to the Islay smoke bombs out there. For a different variation of Laphraoig offerings, this boasts a a decent nose of oakiness, sweet citrus and vanila flavor that is balanced with the smoke and peat. It will forever turn you to the peaty side !! Cheers
It's a gorgeous Peaty whiskey. If you don't like the medicinal notes of idoine and it may be one to skip but it's not as bad as people say. Not as aggressive as the 10, stick a few drops of water in and it smacks you around. would buy it again
I really enjoyed my bottle. For far too long, I was hesitating to go anywhere near peated whiskies but this was a really unforgettable experience. This whisky can easily be accompanied with some top notch food dishes. It also goes really well on its own. It is well balanced in my honest opinion although It may take longer for some to appreciate it for what it offers.
Smokey yes but more like burnt out tyres rather than peaty
Pale imitation of the 10 year old and quarter cask. Not terrible, but seems relay think and weak in the mouth compared to its pricier siblings. After this bottle is finished. I will go back to the real thing.
