Our tasting notes feature a contribution from the longest-serving distillery manager in the brand's history, the wonderful John Campbell, who worked at Laphroaig from 1994 until 2021.
This opens on big, smoky muscular peat notes. There are spices, and liquorice, as well as a big dose of salt. This whisky has become slightly sweeter in recent years, and it appears beautifully on the nose, amidst the classic iodine/sticking plasters and cool wood smoke we love.
Seaweed-led, with a hint of vanilla ice cream and more than a whiff of notes from the first aid box (TCP, plasters etc). The oak is big, and muscles its way into the fore as you hold this whisky over your tongue. An upsurge of spices develop – cardamom/black pepper/chilli.
Big and drying, as the savoury, tarry notes build up with an iodine complexity.
The only malt from Laphroaig’s range that John Campbell recommends with water; try it, it opens up the palate massively, providing a dazzling array of additional flavours…

Hilarious to read the bad reviews complaining that it doesn’t taste as good as bourbons like JD or other piss water American rubbish. Islays are easily my favourite , this and Ardbeg 10 are two of my favourites so far. Both fantastic value for the complexity of flavour.
Islay produces some fine peaty smoky whiskies. That's my preferred choice. Most negative reviews are based on the fact that it tastes peaty or smoky and nothing like whisky from other regions. Well if you like peat and smoke, you'll like this.....
Very bold whiskey and noticeably different to the 'Reserve' edition. Smoke and sweetness on the nose. Interestingly, a flavour similar to tanning leather develops on the palate with interchangeable sweetness and saltyness to add to complexity. Nice finish.
This is a totally overrated scotch. It is actually unbelievable that people would pay this kind of money for this crappy scotch when there are so many American bourbons that would sell for half the price that are twice as good. Lol I just think people like to say, I’m drinking scotch for some inane reason
This used to be delightfully "challenging", but it has become almost bland. Certainly not the product I learned to love and appreciate. Such a pity!!
