Our tasting notes feature a contribution from the longest-serving distillery manager in the brand's history, the wonderful John Campbell, who worked at Laphroaig from 1994 until 2021.
This opens on big, smoky muscular peat notes. There are spices, and liquorice, as well as a big dose of salt. This whisky has become slightly sweeter in recent years, and it appears beautifully on the nose, amidst the classic iodine/sticking plasters and cool wood smoke we love.
Seaweed-led, with a hint of vanilla ice cream and more than a whiff of notes from the first aid box (TCP, plasters etc). The oak is big, and muscles its way into the fore as you hold this whisky over your tongue. An upsurge of spices develop – cardamom/black pepper/chilli.
Big and drying, as the savoury, tarry notes build up with an iodine complexity.
The only malt from Laphroaig’s range that John Campbell recommends with water; try it, it opens up the palate massively, providing a dazzling array of additional flavours…

Had this recently at a wedding. Was abseloutley phenomenal. I think I've found my new favorite islay whiskey. I love the lagavulin 16, which is my favorite. But where I live, it can reach 120+£ which is more then I can afford nowadays. However, this is around 40% of that price, much more affordable. Will have to look for this bottle to add to the collection
This is pretty good.. it’s peaty but not too peaty! It’s sweet but not too sweet and then that slight salinity of the coast comes through.. For the price there’s a lot here and I’m not complaining. As single malts go you can’t go too wrong here if you like smoky sweet salinity.
It certainly is the best in by budget. This is the house whisky where'er I lay my hat. Melow yet punchy, a touch of sweetness but mire lbutterscotch the honeyed highlands or cloying sherry. I just wish they'd do a version without the Caramel. Oh and the new bottle design is shit. I mean how low budget si the new packaging.
This is incredibly scotchy, and in the best sort of ways. The peaty-ness is divine, but is something that definitely takes getting used to for the Irish whiskey drinkers. I do remember my first sip being quite hard to swallow. But as months have gone and tastebuds have adjusted I've really come to love this bottle. Something me and my father enjoy together.
It's my favorite malt, ticks all the boxes. Peaty, Smokey, Briney, smooth. It's my go to. Even better when you get it for around the £30 mark. Although I was gifted a bottle of Ardbeg 10 at Christmas and that gives this a good run for it's money mind. But laphroaig and the whole community are just one I'm happy to be apart of. Top malt.
