A half bottle of the iconic, medicinal 10 year Islay's bestselling distillery, Laphroaig. This is a massive, punchy dram, it is said the medicinal character is from the high moss content in the peat.
This opens on big, smoky muscular peat notes. There are spices, and liquorice, as well as a big dose of salt. This whisky has become slightly sweeter in recent years, and it beautifully on the nose, amidst the classic iodine/sticking plasters and cool wood smoke we love.
Seaweed-led, with a hint of vanilla ice cream and more than a whiff of notes from the First Aid box (TCP, plasters etc). The oak is big, and muscles its way into the fore as you hold this whisky over your tongue. An upsurge of spices develop – cardamom/black pepper/chilli.
Big and drying, as the savoury, tarry notes build up with an iodine complexity.

The smoke and peat are an acquired taste. But when you acquire it, boy is this good.
This one is not for the weak of heart! I got it as a bachelor gift for my fiancé, as it seemed like the perfect gift for the occasion. I will admit that when I tried a sample, I probably grew some chest hair as a result: it is strong (I had it neat). Once you sniff it, the aroma will never leave your memory. If you're getting acquainted with smoky whiskys, I recommend opening it up with a bit of water. Worth the purchase! -RV
Flowery descriptions aside, this dram is a "go to" favorite. If words do not do justice, at least try it yourself. Pound for pound, I think your trial will find a flavor-able verdict.
I dunno. But pound for pound nothing disappoints at Laphroaig and their 10yo was the first time I really understand the ponderous appeal of a great Scotch. Many, many, many years wanting to love scotch and wasting time with blends and peatless Speysides led me to this. I can still remember the first time I drank it. Do you like the comfort of campfires? Would you like to have it in a glass? This is where you start. Top 5 distillery of Scotland easily.
So you like talking to plants eh? You must drink a lot of Laphroaig indeed. Signed your boy-plant Alex
