Distilled in 1980 at Lagavulin, this is one of the tremendous Distiller's Editions finished in Pedro Ximénez casks. It's delicious - like peat smoke mixed with syrupy rich sherry.
This bottle was part of a private collection - if you'd like more detailed photos just get in touch!
Believe it or not, this was the first bottle of Scotch I bought...I was 25. I was a friend of a bar whiskey bar owner in Japan who liked to have the foreigner try his country's selection (they have very nice bottles btw). I found this bottle at one of the local sake stores. I tried it and it was a revelation. One night, I invite a friend to the bar and after a while I pull out the bottle and have the owner try it. Then the friend I had brought along falls off his chair drunk and puts a hole in the wall. I gave the owner the bottle as a "I'm so sorry I brought this idiot with me" apology. This bottle, from memory, was the most well balanced isle I have ever tried. Peat was ever-present but it was surrounded by the warm glow of sherry. Every single sip was different, intoxicating and enjoyable. I was able ot taste something new every single time I tried it. It turned me into a diehard fan of Lagavulin. I have since bought a 1991 and a 1994 and only allow myself the pleasure of drinking it when I am already feeling happy, content and relaxed. I have lesser bottles for those "hard day at the office" moments.
A very fine buzz of vanilla tones with smoking wood flavour which is apparent in the bouquet upon opening. If it was wood it certainly wouldn't be ikea!!!! Half a bottle is a good place to be.
