    Lagavulin 16 Year Old

Lagavulin 16 Year Old is truly a benchmark Islay whisky. It’s loved for its deep, earthy, and maritime character with rich notes of dried fruit, vanilla, and smokiness that comes from Islay peat but is more akin to Lapsang Souchong tea in profile.

Before Lagavulin 16, the distillery did have a 12-year-old single malt. But when Diageo launched the Classic Malt series in the 1980s, Lagavulin 16 Year Old was introduced and became the distillery's flagship bottling. It received a boost in popularity after featuring in Parks and Recreation as a favourite drink of Nick Offerman’s character Ron Swanson. Offerman has since collaborated with the distillery on several occasions.

If you're looking for a food pairing for this beauty, try intensely flavoured salty blue cheeses, which complement the intense, peat-rich, sweet and salty character of this Lagavulin wonderfully.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

More like Lapsang Souchong tea than Lapsang Souchong! One of the smokiest noses from Islay. It's big, very, very concentrated, and redolent of iodine, sweet spices, good, mature Sherry and creamy vanilla. Stunning.

    Palate

Very thick and rich. A massive mouthful of malt and Sherry with good fruity sweetness, but also a wonderful sweetness. Big, powerful peat and oak.

    Finish

Long, spicy finish, figs, dates, peat smoke, vanilla.

As a key part of an Islay scotch journey, this is a must!

Wow, I have been exploring and sampling Islay scotch for about a year now after starting three years ago in Speyside and the Lowlands and then two years ago in the Highlands, I have purchased bottles from all major Islay distilleries and most recently had Port charlotte 10 heavy peated after trying a few Laphroaig , Ardbeg, and Bunnahabain bottles. Lagavulin 16 does not disappoint. Really nice dram neat. This is such a great balance of slightly sweet, sherry influence, spice, treacle, and smoke that is not medicinal / band aid which is a note I do not enjoy in expensive peated scotch. I really enjoy the campfire / smoldering wood oven type smoke notes. I see why this is so celebrated and renowned. Slainte Nick Offerman and all the Lagavulin fans out there. Really a significant step up from the 8 year old and worth the extra investment ( for context have not had the Nick Offerman 11 yr or the 12 yr yet).

    Simply The Best

Lagavulin 16 is in my opinion, the whisky that stands head and shoulders above the rest as the benchmark of all Scottish whisky. If you are a lover of smoke and pleated whisky then this is a must for your palate. If Islay had a capital in the realm of whisky then this 70cl bottle would be a worthy champion. Price is a little steep but like all around, the perfect gift for the connoisseur. If you want to start at the top, then look no further.
