Lagavulin 16 Year Old is truly a benchmark Islay whisky. It’s loved for its deep, earthy, and maritime character with rich notes of dried fruit, vanilla, and smokiness that comes from Islay peat but is more akin to Lapsang Souchong tea in profile.
Before Lagavulin 16, the distillery did have a 12-year-old single malt. But when Diageo launched the Classic Malt series in the 1980s, Lagavulin 16 Year Old was introduced and became the distillery's flagship bottling. It received a boost in popularity after featuring in Parks and Recreation as a favourite drink of Nick Offerman’s character Ron Swanson. Offerman has since collaborated with the distillery on several occasions.
If you're looking for a food pairing for this beauty, try intensely flavoured salty blue cheeses, which complement the intense, peat-rich, sweet and salty character of this Lagavulin wonderfully.
More like Lapsang Souchong tea than Lapsang Souchong! One of the smokiest noses from Islay. It's big, very, very concentrated, and redolent of iodine, sweet spices, good, mature Sherry and creamy vanilla. Stunning.
Very thick and rich. A massive mouthful of malt and Sherry with good fruity sweetness, but also a wonderful sweetness. Big, powerful peat and oak.
Long, spicy finish, figs, dates, peat smoke, vanilla.

It's about 5 years since I'd had this. I remember liking it but not necessarily so much more than Laphroaig, and in the meantime the price seems to have shop up into the stratosphere. I must admit that I was sceptical when my friend pulled this out, but you know what, I like this. And I'd pay this for it. At least now and again, as a treat! It's smooth, and pleasantly rich. Nicely integrated phenolics, tar and smoke. Gentle cask influence, and slight licorice in the really long finish
Great service! Delivered promptly and well packaged. Loved the flat packed box too ?
Lagavulin was the first Islay I ever tried so it has a soft spot in my heart. The intensity of smoke was another level. This was the first bottle I bought the day lockdown was announced. I recently purchased another bottle expecting that same feeling but was disappointed. The intensity of smoke has gone, it tastes rougher and less refined. To make matters worse the price point is now obscene. I have a new favourite now the Laphropoig 10 year old Sherry Cask. Head and shoulder above Lagavulin
I read the reviews, and the tasting notes, and felt this was a good fit for me, but the smokeyness is overpowering in my opinion, it drowns out any other flavours. I will continue with Balvenie Caribbean Cask, which, to me, is a well balanced whiskey.
Best one I have had from them, its very smooth. Not a harsh peaty taste but very subtle. A simple blend of flavours.
