Lagavulin 16 Year Old is truly a benchmark Islay whisky. It’s loved for its deep, earthy, and maritime character with rich notes of dried fruit, vanilla, and smokiness that comes from Islay peat but is more akin to Lapsang Souchong tea in profile.
Before Lagavulin 16, the distillery did have a 12-year-old single malt. But when Diageo launched the Classic Malt series in the 1980s, Lagavulin 16 Year Old was introduced and became the distillery's flagship bottling. It received a boost in popularity after featuring in Parks and Recreation as a favourite drink of Nick Offerman’s character Ron Swanson. Offerman has since collaborated with the distillery on several occasions.
If you're looking for a food pairing for this beauty, try intensely flavoured salty blue cheeses, which complement the intense, peat-rich, sweet and salty character of this Lagavulin wonderfully.
More like Lapsang Souchong tea than Lapsang Souchong! One of the smokiest noses from Islay. It's big, very, very concentrated, and redolent of iodine, sweet spices, good, mature Sherry and creamy vanilla. Stunning.
Very thick and rich. A massive mouthful of malt and Sherry with good fruity sweetness, but also a wonderful sweetness. Big, powerful peat and oak.
Long, spicy finish, figs, dates, peat smoke, vanilla.

This is the first single malt whisky i have ever tried in my life, and soon I fell in love with Lagavulin and bought it again after trying out whisky in similar price range. Amazing, rich, smokey, like a little bomb of flavour, explode in your mouth.
The person who gave this half a star, when you go to ride the mustang, pack a saddle, boy. A beautiful smoky number, hints of paprika on the nose, a long finish with a hint of vanilla. Heaven.
Yeah, I bought a bottle ... YUCK !!!!!!!! lose 99.99 percent of the smoke flavor so you can enjoy the whiskey!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is NOT drinkable because of the overwhelming smoke flavor. I have added it to barbeque sauce for the smoke, diluted it with anything to mask the smoke.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is NOT peaty ... it is ALL smoke flavoring!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Again ... YUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WAY over whatever it was supposed to be!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My favorite alcohol is whiskey and I ALWAYS go for something top shelf and old ... but this is disgusting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IF it was just the batch ... you owe whoever else purchased from this batch a refund!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Everyone comments about the “peat” … do they even know what they’re talking about? If you plan to buy this whiskey, find out wtf is peat and why the fuck there’s peat in it. Be prepared … but the taste and smoothness, yes, very good.
One of the BEST peated *ISLAY* whiskies of ALL time, A CLASSIC for sure!!!
