    Lagavulin 16 Year Old

Lagavulin 16 Year Old is truly a benchmark Islay whisky. It’s loved for its deep, earthy, and maritime character with rich notes of dried fruit, vanilla, and smokiness that comes from Islay peat but is more akin to Lapsang Souchong tea in profile.

Before Lagavulin 16, the distillery did have a 12-year-old single malt. But when Diageo launched the Classic Malt series in the 1980s, Lagavulin 16 Year Old was introduced and became the distillery's flagship bottling. It received a boost in popularity after featuring in Parks and Recreation as a favourite drink of Nick Offerman’s character Ron Swanson. Offerman has since collaborated with the distillery on several occasions.

If you're looking for a food pairing for this beauty, try intensely flavoured salty blue cheeses, which complement the intense, peat-rich, sweet and salty character of this Lagavulin wonderfully.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

More like Lapsang Souchong tea than Lapsang Souchong! One of the smokiest noses from Islay. It's big, very, very concentrated, and redolent of iodine, sweet spices, good, mature Sherry and creamy vanilla. Stunning.

    Palate

Very thick and rich. A massive mouthful of malt and Sherry with good fruity sweetness, but also a wonderful sweetness. Big, powerful peat and oak.

    Finish

Long, spicy finish, figs, dates, peat smoke, vanilla.

    Great whisky

Very nice, different from the “red paper” but comparing the two I couldn’t tell you which one I like better. I’m not sure if the current “criticism” is about not embracing change, the price hike or a lot of people just didn’t like the different taste either way in humble opinion it’s still an excellent whiskey. People also compare it to laphroaig which I’m not a fan of or adberg or port charlotte which I also love.

    You won’t be disappointed!

My new favorite. Smoky mid-palate with a smooth rich finish. Reminds me of a fine leather that’s been infused with a stone fireplace. Comforting throughout. Hint of spice in each smooth comforting sip. Great aftertaste without being overwhelmed. At least by the smoke. Crafted and undeniably enjoyable.

    pricey

I bought a bottle of the original release and thought it was amazing but not now at this price. I know prices have gone up, but I have taken that into account.

Quite a bit too Smokey for me but when blended it’s excellent.

Just bought my first bottle. While it is good I believe it to be much more Smokey than peaty. I’have not yet acquired the strong smoke taste. So quite a bit strong. However I am not a connoisseur of scotch as I’ve begun to switch over from bourbon but have purchased Belavanie 14 and Belvanie Double Wood 16, Dalwhinnie 15 and Glenmorangie 15 (limited edition)…I really like the Glenmorangie out of all of them for my palate. So and I apologize in advance to the true scotch drinkers but I blended the Glenmorangie 15 with the Lagavulin 16 and it is very very good for my taste. A great taste of quite a variety of notes and not too Smokey. Cheers. Peace and Good Health to you all.

    Nectar

Tried quite a few smokey whiskys over the years & none come close to Lagavulin. Not for the faint hearted though.
