The Diageo Special Releases welcomed back the Lagavulin 12 for 2018. This is the 18th incarnation of the Islay single malt, which only missed the very first edition in 2002. The limited release was matured in refill American Oak hogsheads and bottled at 57.8% ABV.
This bottle was part of a private collection - if you'd like more detailed photos just get in touch!
A classic Lagavulin – smouldering barbeque smoke, oodles of citrus peels, raspberry and peach. It's quite green, with a freshly cut grass vibe in there too. Then there's a wet wood aroma to keep it interesting.
Bonfire embers give way to hay, orange peel, toffee apples and salted caramel. Burned marshmallows, dark chocolate and cigar smoke, too.
Drying with bitter orange and wood smoke.
A deliciously smoky yet multi-dimensional whisky. We like. A lot.

Something that really annoys me on this site is how people review a whisky that they have never sampled based on the price. Even some of the reviews here from people who have (apparently) tasted the whisky are reviewing on price, not quality. This seems to be symptomatic of social media these days whether the uninformed like to shout opinions loudly. If you want to make a point, don't add a star rating! I remember this idiocy effecting the Bowmore Devils Cask III reviews. in particular where people were horrified by the price of this (fantastic) whisky. I understand the concerns over value, but DON'T REVIEW (or at least add stars), if you haven't drunk. Personally I stopped buying the fantastic Lag 12 range in 2016 because of the continued price increases. However with the £20 discount I've bought one as a Xmas present for myself. Review the whisky and let others decide if they want to pay the premium price. Otherwise just comment!
They were more than pushing it when they were asking £70 - £80 for the Lagavulin Special Release but £109.95 is way over the value of this whisky, being a Lagavulin fan I stupidly bought some in the hope it would somehow be something extra special which they have bottled this year, it is no better than previous years and it is certainly not worth the asking price. That is Lagavulin now off my list of drinking whisky, a total rip off.
Idiot price for what you get. Quality gets lower and lower and price higher and higher. Not reccommended...
I've had 3 different releaes of Lagavulin 12. They've all been stellar whiskies and are my favourite in the Lagavulin range. I currently have a bottle of the 2015 edition open. However, the price increases have been shocking. To increase the price by £20 of an already overpriced whisky is disgraceful from Diageo. There's better whisky out there for cheaper.
Reviews are also there to help people gauge if it's good value for money. Is over a 100% increase in cost in less than ten years not worth highlighting?
