A frequent favourite of Diageo's Special Releases, this is the 2014 edition 12 year old Lagavulin single malt Scotch whisky. Featuring malts that were distilled in 2001 and 2002, matured in refill American oak casks and bottled at cask strength, it's a top way to enjoy some of Islay's excellent single malt.
This bottle was part of a private collection - if you'd like more detailed photos just get in touch!
Sweet sea salty smoke, citrus, green apple skin, leather, malt wine, pretty much everything you're after really.
Candied lemons, lime marmalade, mixed fruit and nut all wrapped in a plume of big, dry, savoury smoke.
Long with drying wood smoke.
Slightly different again this year, with many commenting on its dryness. Still well worth buying, however.
Not what I was expecting at all . Not much body, one dimensional dry wood smoke and medicinal notes with a hint of dry meat for the finish....not much else to balance it out. Adding water does in no way help the flavour develop . I love my Islays but this one ...... she's got a tough face and no curves !
by far one of the best cask strengths out there highly recommended.
Been buying this one since 2009 and i think that this release is the best so far (together with the 2009). Big smoky nose with lot of medicinal elements as well like clorine. What I like most is that you really don't need to add any water. The strenght is perfect. Medium bodied yet fat and oily with rich smoke and salt. Like a smoked ham. Not much wood really just distillerycharachter all the way. Another thing I like on the nose is that the gravel and chalky notes from last years release is gone. It feels more mature and the smoke reminds more of the warm smoke from the 16 year old.
