    anCnoc Flaughter

The peatier of the two first releases from the anCnoc Peaty Collection by Knockdhu distillery, the Flaughter is named after a spade used to take off the top layer of peat, which is usually richer and has more roots. This imparts a smokier quality to the whisky, a notion Knockdhu are trying to convey through the peatier Flaughter.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Oilier and a little fatter than the Rutter, with linseed, peanut skins, coffee and soot. Blackcurrant and then caramel emerge along with a touch of salinity.

    Palate

Big and mouth coating with peat, barley, white peach and toffee, then fennel and a hint of mint.

    Finish

Long. Nice and sooty to start with, nutty too, before medicinal iodine and more smoke emerge.

    Overall

This flaughter is round and robust. Something that could also be said of this whisky, peated to level of 14.8 PPM (parts per million).

    A birthday present to remember

Being an Islay nut my wife sought advice before purchasing a bottle for my birthday and ended up with this beauty from Knockdhu rather than my usual tipples of choice. I am very glad she took the advice too. This is a gorgeously peated malt with a much sweeter and more mellow profile than I would normally choose but delicious and already a firm favourite. If you like peat but find some of the bigger Islay names too much then the flaughter is definitely worth you trying. It is not one of the cheaper malts but the peat combined with a definite smokiness, vanilla overtones and caramel sweetness result in a dram worthy of any collection. You should not be disappointed.
