Knob Creek is a small batch bourbon produced by Jim Beam, distilled in a more traditional style and aged 9 nine years. It is named for the area in Kentucky where Abraham Lincoln grew up, it is said that the creek nearly claimed his life when he was swimming.
The nose is quite spicy and sweet. There are notes of melted salty butter on granary toast, there are notes of toasty oak and a touch of rye with caramel sweetness. The palate is quite peppy and full. There are notes of candy floss and nut oil, a touch of spice and dark chocolate, a little spice and charred oak. The finish is long with a touch of dryness, there are notes of nut oils and vanilla spice.
Love it
Wouldnt mix this stuff with anything. Just simply hard to stop drinking it. Smooth buttery caramel notes.
This is bourbon with no apologies. It has everything real bourbon should have, without the ridiculous price of more pretentious brands. Although it is a terrific sipping whiskey, it is best enjoyed with ice or a small splash of water. The slight dilution unlocks the true complexity of the sweet, smokey, caramel flavors, and enhances the silky mouth of this beautiful spirit. Not probably a bourbon for beginners, as the strong proof and somewhat concentrated flavors may be too much for those used to typical 80 proof "popular" whiskies. For the real bourbon lover, however, this is the best dollar for dollar value in high end bourbon.
I managed to score a bottle of the Knob Creek 9yo Small Batch really cheap (about £14) at a duty-free shop in Asia. A total steal as I had been looking to buy this very label (most shops there were charging £20-22). I thought it was a touch overwhelming neat (no surprise there at this ABV), but with just a little bit of water and a few minutes in the glass, it developed a wonderfully creamy mouthfeel and a very enjoyable flavour profile that contained all the elements you'd expect in an aged Bourbon: oak, caramel, baking spices. The finish is superb, and although drinking this wasn't like a religious experience or anything, it's a solid 100-proof offering, and I'd happily buy it again, even at a higher price. In all truth, appreciating high-ABV spirits is an acquired taste. I'd never give a cask strength Scotch to a newbie, for example, and neither would I pour the Knob Creek. Perhaps those who left such dire reviews would be well-served to try this Bourbon more than one time. The appreciation does grow, believe me. And if after 4-5 proper tastings, you still don't like it, then that's of course fine -- taste is purely subjective.
I noticed that the regular bottles of Small Batch no longer say "aged nine years". I'm wondering if that's still the case?
