Oloroso Sherry matured single cask whisky from Taiwan, bottled without artificial colouring or chill filtration. Now finally available in Europe, Kavalan Solist Sherry Cask won a Double Gold Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and was named Best Rest of the World Single Malt Whisky at the World Whiskies Awards in 2012!
complexity in this sherry bomb. A next level on the glendronach 18 year old. Highly recommended. Amazing what they have done in such a short amount of time.
This whisky is a sterling achievement from this excellent Taiwanese distillery. It has a vibrant fruity smell thanks to the sherry casking during its making and the visually the colour compliments the aroma with a deeper slightly ruby colour compared to the other Kavlan whiskes. The taste is complex with deep almost berry taste to start off with followed by a slightly oaked vanilla flavour. Despite its high alcohol content this whisky is very well balanced and the flavours leave you questioning whether this really exceeds the 58% mark.
I recommend building up to this with a few other drink before hand. At 57.8% alcohol, you want your senses desensitized a bit. Having it as the first drink of the day, all I taste is the burn. First impression, this smells too much like sherry. Why not just drink sherry? But it really opens up after a couple sips. Fruit, fruit, and more fruit. A fruit bomb if there ever was one. Once, in my many tastings, I got a hint of coffee and mmmmmm, been chasing it ever since. The finish varies, something more fruit and sometimes wood barrel goodness. All in all, not my favorite, but very interesting. I keep it around to show people the range scotch can have. For an intro, I usually go a Highland, then a Islay, then this.
Superb and one of the kind!
Hi there! The current batch is from cask number S081219016 and retains the 57.8% ABV. However, in future the cask number will change, based on the availability of the product, so we cannot guarantee that the current cask number will be the same in a few months' time. --The Chaps at Master of Malt
