Kilchoman's Machir Bay is an excellent single malt Scotch whisky from the isle of Islay. The distillers use whisky which has been matured in ex-bourbon barrels and Oloroso Sherry butts, resulting in a well-balanced flavour profile, with highlights of vanilla biscuits, light fruit and wafts of warm peat smoke. A top expression from Islay's farm distillery.
Citrus zests, crumbly vanilla biscuits and layers of elegant peat smoke.
A generous burst of tropical fruit and dried raisin opens the palate. Warming smoke continues to waft playfully.
Sherried fruits and sprinkle of cracked black pepper.
$34.14 - $87.08
Absolutely brilliant, moreover the bottle fits nicely in the locker …..
Typical Islay, which I enjoy, & I also find it powerful on the peat/smoke but its lack of age & depth of character is evident. Nothing special beyond those signature Islay notes shines through, really. Not bad, but it should have been aged longer to round out its flavor. Ardbeg's Wee Beastie 5 demonstrates the benefits of just a little more patience. But Kilchoman is definitely headed in the right direction.
As a Islay lover I wanted to give this a shot. Love their story of being farm distillery. Now I would want to give this a 5 star but it's more like 3 or 4. Opening the bottle it smells vile and like chemical acid. Weird. Let it rest for a while and the nose tones down little. Then picking citrus and hint of peat. Not bad, but not really good. Probably too young. Gonna taste their other products and see if they have what it takes to be Islay whisky. Also a bit overpriced in my mind.
Saw this bottle between the already known, so decided to try it out. At home I realized there was no age indication but I guess I was attracted by the nice package and the unfamiliarity of the brand. After pouring in a glass I was quite surprised by the gentle Islay smell, very smooth, citrus, butter and no strong alcohol smell, even at 46%. At the palate a bit strong, with honey, dried nuts, chocolate, but the finish was really smooth, again with citrus dominating, perhaps a bit of apricot. Can recommended this whiskey, there are better ones (aren't there always?) but this one is clearly nice. Will buy again and that says enough.
Lagavulin 16 is in short supply in the US northeast right now, presumably because of the boats piled up at a few backlogged ports. This is a reasonable option while I wait. Lacks the complex citrus aromas and flavors of the Lagavulin, but in its favor the Kilchoman does offer the smoky peat I look for, sweeter aromas of spice cake and fruit, and salty hints of sea-spray.
