Kilchoman
Scotland
Single Malt
It's Kilchoman's 2021 release of the Loch Gorm single malt Scotch whisky! This series from the distillery on Islay is all about bringing sherried sweetness together with peaty tastiness. For the 2021 release, 24 Oloroso sherry butts were used to create the expression, with 17,000 bottles released. If you like your single malt to have a good helping of smoke and dried fruit brilliance, this has your name on it (not literally, unless you just so happen to be called Gorm).
Smoky clove and a hint of cumin, balanced by sultana and prune, plus a touch of roasted almond.
Enjoyably chocolatey at first, though soon enough the dry, earthy smoke builds and comes to the fore.
Cherry, roast chestnuts, a smidge of medicinal peat.
A lovely, interesting dram. The traditional Islay smokiness is there lurking behind rich fruitiness and a touch of spice. To me the smokiness is more prevalent on the palate than on the nose which hints at dried fruits with forest nuts and smokey peat. The palate is spicy, rich, fruit cake and ends with a lingering smokey dryness. The finish is lingering, spicy, peaty and slightly sweet.
