To mature their Kavalan Solist Vinho Barrique expression, the King Car distillers in Taiwan use casks which have held both red and white wines, before being re-toasted. The whisky is fully matured in these casks to help their Taiwanese single malt develop a bold, expressive flavour profile brimming with berry, plum and caramelised sugar notes. At the Los Angeles Wine & Spirits Competition this exciting Taiwanese whisky received a Gold Medal and an impressive score of 91 out of 100.
Beautiful nose and complex on the pallet. The slightest sense of an oily coating that quickly evaporates.
This is absolutely a different experience from cheap whisky like Famous Grouse! It packs an incredible punch at 57.8% and goes down very smoothly with a dark colored liquor and intense afterglow. It’s the rocket fuel of all whiskys hailing from the the steamy Taipei tropics many miles from cool foggy Scotland. Light a candle and get knocked back by this dark and tasty ether. You’ll have fine stories to tell after a dram of this “Aqua vitae” from Formosa.
I tasted a sample bottle first and was put off by a weird spiciness. Few months later I picked up a bottle. It was remarkable experience and I went on to buy it over and over again. Different casks. Nose has a lot of melon. A bit of banana. Sweetness of wine. On the palate, its great. Thick. Full. I compared a 3yr (w12..2015) bottling to a 5yr bottling (w12..2018) and found the latter had some spice & oakiness. Finish is tremendous. Delicious. No wonder it won the award in 2015. A great whisky.
Strong, balanced truly unique
Inviting and warm - with just enough smoke to balance to caramelized sugars, followed by a refreshingly sweet, trailing surprise of melon and apricot-like flavor. Definitely one of the best out there.
