This edition of Kavalan's Solist single malt Taiwanese whisky was drawn from casks that previously held Moscatel Sherry. This has imparted a full-bodied fruit sweetness to the intriguing whisky.
Toffee Crisp bars and honey, before layers of caramel-drizzled dried fruits and peaches.
Quite nutty (think walnuts and almonds). Still has big notes of apricot and sultanas all the way through.
Rather chocolate-y on the finish.
Kavalan has Manzanilla, Amontillado, Moscatel & PX cask finishes in the superior range of Solists. Priced higher and they come in wooden boxes with velvetty fabric lining. Great presentation. Color: Maroon. Deep brown. Dark Mahogany Nose: Rum. Raisins. Sultanas. Fruity. Can nose all day and night. Caramel toffee. Date pudding. Chocolate brownie. Palate: Full. Coffee. Caramel. Sultanas. Dark berries. Magnificent. Lovely mouth coating whisky. Finish: Elegant. Not as acidic as other Moscatel cask matured whiskies. Rhubarb. Tastes like a fine dessert from raisins, cocoa, walnuts. Brilliant.
I now am trying very hard to source one after tasting it at my friend's place. On the same night I also tasted Macallan 18, Glenfiddich 21 & 25, Taketsuru 21 and JW blue label the casks edition. All wonderful whiskies but the Moscatel really did steal my heart.
